Mount Vernon Torch Club Penny Drive

Mount Vernon Torch Club Penny Drive

Club Members proudly display coins they collected during the Torch Club penny drive.

The Mount Vernon Torch Club, a Boys & Girls Club community service program, had another amazing month. For the month of August Torch Club members orchestrated a Penny Drive to benefit the Mount Vernon Teen Oasis Shelter. 12 kids ages 6- 11, went around their neighborhood to collect donations and asked residents to donate any change they had in their pockets.

The kids set an original goal of raising $50 in change for the Center. During the last week of summer programing, the kids counted the money with the help of some teen members and rolled up all the coins. We are proud to announce that the Mount Vernon Torch Club members not only met their goal, but exceeded their expectations and collected a total of $139.50!

The Anacortes Club closed its doors on August 17th for the remainder of the summer season, in preparation of its big move to City Hall. On Monday, August 20th, 30+ volunteers and Club Members joined the Anacortes Staff in a full day of packing and moving to the Club’s new location. Moving trucks were donated for use by service clubs throughout the community, making a long day much shorter and easier. Bob’s Chowder Bar provided lunch for all volunteers, and Starbucks provided coffee in the morning. Thank you to all of the volunteers who donated their time to our move, it was a huge success! Club Staff will be spending the next three weeks putting the new Club together in preparation of the Club’s grand opening celebration on Tuesday, September 11th from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

Mount Vernon Field Day

Mount Vernon Field Day

Mount Vernon Field Day participants engaged in a tug-o-war contest.

On August 11th, the Mount Vernon Boys and Girls Club hosted a Field Day as part of the month long, Mayor’s August Wellness Challenge. The weather was beautiful for the families that came out on Saturday morning to participate in water balloon tosses, tug-of-war, beach ball volleyball, soccer and lots of other fun games.

Mayor Jill Boudreau visited with participants and Mount Vernon Police Officer, Jon Gerondale came and let the kids sit and check out his patrol car. Also, five volunteers from the Kohl’s Cares For Kids Program came out and helped set up and play with all the kids. Once the games were over, everyone sat down and enjoyed a barbeque lunch prepared by Rachael Sylte from Judd & Black. To end the day everyone joined together for a few more games of dodge ball to make for an incredible Field Day at the Club!

The Mount Vernon Club would like to thank Mayor Boudreau for allowing us the opportunity to host an event for the August Wellness Challenge. We would also like to give a big thank you to all the participants who attended our first ever Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club Field Day!

Triple Play Boot Camp Participants with their certificates.

The Mount Vernon Club Members finished off this year with a 2 week Boot Camp Fitness Challenge! The challenge consisted of six, 45 minute workouts. Each challenge started off with the members doing a 10 minute warm-up and stretch to prepare themselves for an intensive 20 minute cardio workout around the track and in the field. Following their cardio the kids then participated in 10 minutes of strength training exercises that utilized their own body weight as resistance. Finally they did a 5 minute cool down and stretched out before heading back inside. The kids stayed hydrated and learned why working out is important for their bodies!

Anacortes Club Members Visit Smilk Beach

Club Members spend last day of Summer Day Camp enjoying Smilk Beach

On Friday, August 17th, the Anacortes Club took 11 Club Members to the home of Tom and Pam Allen to enjoy a day on Smilk Beach. This field trip has been an end of summer tradition for the Anacortes Club and the Allen’s for four years now. Members are chosen for this event based on attendance during the summer program, and good character throughout the summer. Club Members arrived to the Allen’s and immediately found rubber boots and headed down to the beach for an hour of digging for Clams, playing in the water, and exploring the beach. The Allen family provided a delicious lunch of crab, oysters, and pizza, then provided a bucket full of water balloons for a balloon toss and water fight. The Anacortes kids and staff had a great day relaxing on the beach before heading back to the Club to finish of the last day of Summer Camp with their friends. Thank you to Tom and Pam Allen for opening their home to the Anacortes Club, we look forward to next years visit!

Anacortes Members Learn Ukulele

Anacortes Club Members learn Ukelele at Senior Activity Center

On Thursday, August 9th, members of the Anacortes Boys & Girls Club took a walking trip to the Senior Activity Center for its weekly Ukulele class. Members were able to sit amongst participants, many of which lent their personal ukuleles to Club members and taught them how to play different chords. When not playing an instrument, Club members were encouraged to sing along to songs, and even got to bang on pots and pans for one! This is the first trip to the ukulele class that the Anacortes Club has taken. With the Anacortes Club’s move to city hall, a walking trip will not be as convienent, but plans are already in the works to bring the ukulele class to the kids. Seniors and Club members alike enjoyed this day of connection between the different parts of our community. We look forward to our next class!
