Youth of the Month – September 2014

Carlos attends La Venture Middle School and has been a Member at the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club for 10 months.  

Carlos loves to run tournaments all day. When he isn’t running a tournament, he is found in the learning center helping kids with their homework during Power Hour.

Hannah attends Centennial Elementary School and has been an Member at the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club for three months. 

First things first, homework. Hannah’s first destination once she arrives at the Club is the learning center!

Ryan attends Lincoln Elementary School and has been a Member at the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club for one year. 

Ryan shows great sportsmanship and is always willing to help out younger Members with outdoor games.

Alysa R.
, age 8

Alysa attends Centenial Elementary School and has been an Member at the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club for one and a half years. 

Alysa is not your typical artist, although she does like to participate in the art program, her passion lies with cheer and dance. During this last month she’s been leading a group of ladies and choreographing a cheer for our Torch Club.

Austin attends La Venture Middle School and has been a Member at the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club for 5 years.  

Austin has stepped up this past month. He’s been a great role model during this new school year and participating in programs such as Torch Club and Power Hour.

Hannah attends Centennial Elementary School and has been an Member at the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club for three months. 

Two months in a row! Hannah has been rocking it during Power Hour and even makes sure that people stay on task and be focused.

Johanna attends Centenial Elementary School and has been an Member at the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club for almost four years. 

Johanna loves art and understands that it can get very messy. She is always found helping out after art programs cleaning the art room and preparing it for the next day.

Youth Of The Month – October 2014

Gavin F., age 6

Gavin attends Fidalgo Elementary and became a Club member earlier this year.  He continually lightens the mood wherever he goes with his infectious smile and expressive demeanor. Gavin is a delight to have in all programs and games, bringing just the right mix of participation and silliness!

Natalie H., age 9

Natalie attends Island View and became a Club member earlier this year.  It is easy to forget that she is only nine years old as she sometimes seems like one of the staff here!  Natalie’s intellect and enthusiasm ensure success in whatever she takes on, from Club games to her own bright future (probably as president)!

Evan attends Anacorte Middle School and has been a Club member for 6 whopping years!  You can spot Evan daily as the teen with headphones and a basketball, always ready for a pick-up game.  Sharp witted and jovial, Evan keeps the staff on their toes with his trademark humorous banter.

Abby attends Mt. Erie Elementary and has been a Club member since 2009.  She has been a fixture at power hour, diligently completing her homework and acting as a standout role model to many of the younger members.  Though always on task, she enjoys a good laugh on a regular basis.

, age 9

Ainsley attends Mt Erie Elementary and has been a Club member since last year.  As the Art Room’s top attendee, Ainsley not only participates, but flourishes under Monica’s instruction.  Producing many expertly crafted pieces each week, we can only hope she remembers all of us little people on her way to galleries across the globe!

Nathan attends Fidalgo Elementary and has been a Club member since 2012.  Anybody who has played a game with Nathan knows he shines not only in his athletic skill, but in superior sportsmanship.  He is a wonderful example to all the younger children of how to play, succeed, and enjoy anything you put yourself into.

Torch Club Leadership 2014-2015

All 16 Members of the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club’s Torch Club program participated in the race to become a program leader. After each member prepared and presented his or her speeches, the group voted for their leaders.

We are happy to announce our 2014/15 Torch Club Leaders for the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club. Lauren N. is President, Darienne W. is Vice President, Torrance D. is the Treasurer, Gaby F. is the Secretary, and Julissa F. is the back-up Treasurer and Secretary. Congrats to the all our Torch Club leaders!

Club Kids ReMix a Party Classic

Chex ReMix

Club members put a spin on the classic Chex Party Mix.

This week at the La Conner Club, members made a Chex ReMix during Cooking Club. Here is the recipe so you can try at home with your family.

Ingredients: 

  • 4 Cups Wheat
  • 4 Cups Corn Chex Mix
  • 4 Tablespoons of butter
  • 4 Tablespoons of taco seasoning
  • 1 Cup grated parmesan cheese
  • Optional Mix-Ins: Pretzels, dried fruit, chocolate chips, peanuts, goldfish crackers.

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Melt butter and seasoning together in a mixing bowl then set aside. In a larger mixing bowl, mix all of the dry ingredients.  Take the melted butter and seasoning, pour over the dry ingredients and mix all together until well coated. Pour mixture on a large cookie sheet. Spread out evenly on the cookie sheet. Sprinkle on the parmesan cheese and heat in oven until melted. Let the Chex Mix ReMix cool off and enjoy!

Youth of the Month – October

Erin, age 10

Erin joined the Club this school year and has been a great addition to the La Conner Club.  She is very involved in Power Hour, Triple Play and Positive Sprouts and recently joined SMART Girls and Torch Club.  She is always quick to help when an extra hand is needed around the club.  Erin’s favorite thing to do while she is at the Club is to participate in art projects.  When she grows up, she’d like to join the Coast Guard.

Alex, age 10

Alex has been spending his afternoons at the Club for 2 years.  While here, he enjoys taking part in Triple Play games, Prize Bingo, anything Pokemon related, and most recently, Torch Club. When asked what his favorite thing about the Club is, he said that it is hanging out with his friends and the Pokemon Tournaments.  His goal for this year is to earn 800 Club Bucks so that he can afford the Wii in the Club Store.

Summer, age 13

Summer has been a member for 2 years.  While at the club she enjoys helping younger kids with their homework, being the Cooking Club photographer and spending time with her friends hanging out at Teen Night.  When asked what her favorite thing about the Club is, Summer said it is helping to clean up the building and Teen Night.  In the future, Summer hopes to join the Navy or be a police officer.

Homework All-Star
Anthony, age 8

Anthony has been a member for 2 years.  When he’s at the club, you can find him participating in Triple Play activities, working on his homework during Power Hour or in the Gamesroom.  When asked what his favorite thing about the Club is, he said it’s taking part in the Daily Challenge and getting his homework done so he has more time to play.  Anthony would like to work at the La Conner Boys & Girls Club someday, to teach other kids how to play fun games like dodgeball.

Noah has been a member for 2 years.  He loves sports and participates in Daily Challenges, Triple Play games and Tournaments.  When asked what his favorite thing is about the Club, he said it is helping out around teh Club to earn Club Bucks.  He also loves playing Capture the Flag.  Noah’s goal for the future is to become a great football player.

Artist of the Month 
Rachel, age 9

Rachel has been coming to the Club for 2 years.  She does her best to have a positive outlook every day and to be friends with everyone.  Rachel loves participating in all kinds of art projects and has a great sense of creativity that she brings to the table in all of her work.  When asked what her favorite thing is about the Club, she said that it is hanging out with her friends and getting to be herself.  In the future, Rachel would like to help make the world a better place by putting an end to littering.
