Anacortes Club Members learn about food groups in Healthy Habits

This week in healthy habits we continued to learn more about the food groups. Kids were challenged to categorize over 20 pictures of food into the corresponding food groups. They were able to do this quite easily; they have learned a lot over the past few weeks! The concept of portion size was introduced and we discussed easy ways to find serving size equivalents (e.g. a baseball is roughly equivalent to one cup, and 2 servings of vegetables). During cooking time, we made baked apples, a healthy apple pie alternative!

Reverse Apple Pie

Ingredients:

3-4 granny smith apples

¼ cup and 2 tbsp melted butter

½ cup oats

½ cup whole wheat flour

½ cup brown sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

Pinch of salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350⁰ F

2. Slice 3-4 apples in half, then scoop out the seeds and stem part with a melon baller.

3. Mix together all remaining ingredients in a medium size bowl.

4. Fill and top apple halves with oat mixture.

5. Bake at 350⁰ F until tops are golden and apples swell, about 30 minutes.
