Anacortes Healthy Habits Update

This week in Healthy Habits at the Anacortes Club kids learned about the powerful influence of advertisements on eating and food purchasing behaviors. After watching a few kid-centered television advertisements, we examined the hidden messages and tactics used to persuade us to purchase a company’s product. The kids identified prizes as a powerful tool to influence their desire for a certain foods. Images depicted in an advertisement also shaped youth perceptions. Many kids thought that Fruit Loops contained real fruit because fruit was shown in the commercial!

For our cooking project we made a healthy take on a dinner classic, spaghetti with turkey meatballs!

Easy Turkey Meatballs

 Ingredients:

2 TBSP olive oil

1 (20 oz.) package of ground turkey

1 egg, beaten

1/3 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs

1 TBSP dried parsley

2 TSP Italian seasoning

 

Directions:

1) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking dish with olive oil, and place it in the oven while preheating.

2) In a medium bowl, mix together the ground turkey, egg, bread crumbs, and seasoning. Form the meat into golf ball sized meatballs. Place about 1 inch apart in the hot baking dish. Very lightly, press down to flatten the bottom.

3) Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven, then turn over and continue baking for about 5 more minutes, or until somewhat crispy on the outside. Serve with pasta and sauce or however you’d like!
