Media Literacy Speaker

SMART Moves program

As part of our SMART Moves program, an intern from United General Hospital came to the Mount Vernon Boys and Girls Club to speak about media literacy on Friday, July 13th. Jessa talked to our members about false advertising, advertising gimmicks and how what you see isn’t often what you get. To demonstrate this concept she showed the kids two pictures.

The first one was of an advertised item and the second picture was what the item really looked like, in which all of the kids could identify objects from what they ate to the toys they played with.

Jessa then linked that to advertisements of cigarettes and how they make smoking look fun and exciting, but it is really dangerous and unhealthy. To end the presentation she had the kids make their own warning labels for smoking and the kids did an amazing job.
