MLK Day on the Hill
On Monday, January 19th Mount Vernon and Anacortes Boys & Girls Club Youth spent the day in Olympia at the Capital as part of the MLK Day on the Hill event. Skagit Valley Club youth represented the 40th District, joining other Boys & Girls Club Youth from around the state.
Youth had the opportunity to tour the state Capital, Legislature Building, and Governor’s mansion. The day also included sitting in on a live Congressional roll call, learning the journey from Bill to Law in the Senate Gallery, and a visit to the Vietnam memorial. Club members also had the opportunity to meet with Senator Kevin Ranker for a question and answer time.
This event organized by the Boys & Girls Club Washington State Association provides youth the opportunity to not just learn about civic engagement but to get inspired to make a difference in their own community. Boys & Girls Club strive to instill leadership skills and empower it’s young people to find their voice and become engaged individual who will continue to make a difference in their community as adults.
