MV Rusty Penny Experiment

MV Kids Learn About The Chemical Change Of Oxidation

Members learned about the chemical change of oxidation with the rusty penny experiment. We talked about the color of a new copper penny as compared to the color of the Statue of Liberty which is also made of copper. Members were then given three pennies and a choice of three different liquids, including vinegar, lemon juice, liquid soap, hot sauce, salt water and sugar water. They poured a different liquid over each penny and then made a hypothesis as to which liquid would clean the penny the best. Members will come back on Monday to see if their hypotheses were correct.
