MV Teens Begin Healthy Habits

During our first Teen Healthy Habits lesson, teen members were shown how to properly read a food label and to see what types of ingredients are in the product. Teens learned about the different types of fats, what dietary fiber means and what “based on a 2000 calorie diet” means. Teens were given common snacks that they might enjoy, such as chips, cookies, and soda. By working in teams, Teen Members read different food labels to find out of how much of each substance is in the product; for example, finding the percentage of fat in a box of cookies. The purpose of this activity is to encourage teens to choose healthier snacks.

Upon the completion of the lesson, teen members helped create a healthy fruit salad snack!

  • Fruit salad
  • 4 apples
  • 4 kiwis
  • 4 bananas
  • 1 pomegranate
  • 1 can of coconut milk

Peel kiwis, bananas and pomegranate and conduct all together mixing in the coconut milk into a mixing bowl and serve!
