20th Annual Golf Tournament raises funds for Skagit County youth

The weather couldn’t have been much worse on Friday, August 14th, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the golfers, sponsors, and volunteers that came out to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County at the 20th Annual Golf Tournament. Held at Avalon Golf Links in Burlington, WA, the Golf Tournament is a signature fundraiser for the Clubs, the first of which was held before the Clubs were officially formed. Registration for this popular event was filled by mid July with 36 teams of four participating.

The rain was holding off early on as golfers had the opportunity to test their skills at the games before tournament play and enjoy a delicious lunch donated by Orlando’s Fish and Grill. Owner Jacquelyn Stoneham’s four boys were members of the Anacortes Club and have grown into successful young men. One serves in the Air Force and the others help run the catering business. They were remembered by long-time Club Directors who were thrilled to reconnect with them.

As the horn blast signaled play, it seemed to signal the sky opening up as well. The seasoned Pacific Northwesterners were not deterred. Club teens assisted in caddying and thanking players for their participation. Volunteers and sponsor booths were stationed at the holes with additional chances at prizes. The prize for a hole-in-one was a Chevy Camaro from Title Sponsor, Blade Chevrolet. No one went home with the Camaro but some of the top prizes went to Bob Hawkins for winning both the putting and the chip contests and Angel of the Winds Casino won Best Hole Sponsorship. Their booth featured a spin the wheel game with great take home prizes, like BBQ sets and a free weekend stay. A thunderstorm prompted a quick break in tournament play as teams warmed up and dried off inside, but players were quick to get back at it. Club employees then had time to enjoy a break and try their skills at the driving range and putting area. Team Fildalgo Drive-In won the low-gross tournament. At the end of the day it was the Blade team that took the tournament trophy with the low-net score. Returning players were then greeted with a hearty dinner, courtesy of the Dinner Sponsor, Judd & Black Appliance.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County would like to especially thank sponsors Blade Chevrolet, Judd & Black Appliance, Annette Booth – Allstate Insurance, and Orlando’s Fish and Grill and all of the sponsors, golfers and volunteers that made the tournament possible. All together the Tournament generated more than $50,000 in resources for the Clubs and youth of Skagit County. Next year’s golf tournament is scheduled for Friday, August 12th 2016.
