Positive Sprouts Prep and Plant

Positive Sprouts

Club members pose together in front of their newly sprouting garden.

Last week La Conner’s Positive Sprouts members enjoyed another week of fun in the sun with a variety of garden related activities.   Before setting out to work in the garden they enjoyed listening and learning about nutrition and wellness.  Next, a science experiment with celery, water and food coloring taught the club members how plants get their water.  To showcase what they had learned, youth created a mural depicting a garden scene complete with insects, which pollinate plants, rain, for water,  and sunshine to help the plants grow.

Once outside, Club members were able to collect soil samples to see what they needed help the plants grow and what they needed to discard. Youth worked together to till and weed the planter boxes aerating the soil so that it would be ready for planting.

Later in the week, members created a poster on “You Are What You EAT” then they were ready to plant their seeds! They worked together to plant rows of carrots, radishes, kale, lettuce, oriental vegetables, turnips, collards and spinach.  Next on the agenda for Positive Sprouts is planting flowers in front of the Club!

Positive Sprouts runs every Monday and Wednesday from 3:00 – 4:00pm. For more information regarding this, or any of La Conner’s targeted programs, please contact Program Director Leah Vazquez at (360) 466-3672 or email leahv@bgcskagit.org.
