SMART Girls Begins in Anacortes

SMART Girls at the Anacortes Club

Caring, outgoing, supportive, open, and many more adjectives were identified as the qualities of female role models by teen participants in SMART Girls. Sisters, teachers, and the female staff members at the Anacortes Boys & Girl Club were mentioned as individuals who exemplify these qualities and serve as influential role models.

We explored the powerful ways in which role models shape self-concept, and ultimately one’s actions. Societal messages and social constructs often guide perceptions of what is means to be a girl. It is important to take time to appreciate those around us who encourage the development of our best selves.

SMART Girls is a health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program for girls ages 8 to 17. The program is designed to encourage healthy attitudes and lifestyles that will enable early adolescent girls to develop to their full potential by building the necessary skills to resist negative life influences. SMART Girls will meet each Wednesday afternoon from 2:45 to 3:45pm with Health & Lifeskills Coordinator Rexanne Greenstreet.
